A Prayer for St. Joseph,
Patron of the Universal Church

On December 8, 2020, Pope Francis announced a Year of St. Joseph, in honor of the 150th anniversary of the saint’s proclamation as patron of the Universal Church.

Pope Francis describes St. Joseph as a father who was beloved, tender, loving, obedient, accepting, creatively courageous, working, and in the shadows. As he concludes his apostolic letter, Pope Francis encourages us to pray this prayer for our own conversion:

Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer,
Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
To you God entrusted his only Son;
in you Mary placed her trust;
with you Christ became man.
Blessed Joseph, to us too,
show yourself a father
and guide us in the path of life.
Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage,
and defend us from every evil.

Amen.

From the beginning of his papacy, Pope Francis has devoted much of his attention to the family. At World Youth Day in Brazil in 2013, he spoke often and profoundly to young people about faith and family, noting in one instance: "How precious is the family as the privileged place for transmitting the faith!"

With Pope Francis Celebrates Faith and Familywe honor family life and Pope Francis' commitment to the important role families play in nurturing our faith in God.

We welcome you into our home,
O Lord, and we open ourselves to the grace of your love.
We offer you our very lives in thanks.
Amen
